The Challenge

Build a $200M SMB Linux business to $1B within three years while the Fortune 500 company continued to sell a competing proprietary operating system.

What I Uncovered

The growth opportunity was real, but the customer economics, seller trade-offs, and path to scale were not yet clear.

  • Budget pressure created the opening: IT leaders needed lower-cost ways to close infrastructure gaps.
  • Adoption still carried career risk: Teams needed confidence that Linux could support the right workloads without creating unacceptable operational risk.
  • The path to $1B was not proven: It was unclear whether enough global Linux software solutions existed to support the growth goal.

The Strategic Shift

I used customer and ISV research to clarify the economic case, market inflection point, and where Linux could expand without blurring the role of the proprietary Unix platform.

  • Confirmed the economic driver: Customer interviews validated that IT budget pressure was driving the search for alternatives that could lower technology costs and improve margins.
  • Identified the market inflection point: Linux growth of up to 90% showed that customers had embraced open-source software and that proprietary-platform cannibalization would continue.
  • Built a market-entry model: Geographies could identify first-mover industries, priority workloads, and the ecosystem support required for adoption.

My Contribution

  • Built persona and industry messaging: Translated customer goals and decision criteria into a clearer Linux value story.
  • Identified growth segments: Partnered with global and geographic teams to prioritize where to invest next.
  • Built the transition plan: Delivered positioning and messaging that clarified which market segments Sales should expand into with Linux versus prioritize for Unix.

Cross-Functional Work

I worked across Sales, Business Partners, ISVs, and geographic teams in North America, Europe, and Asia to align growth priorities, resources, and the transition plan.

Outcomes

  • Linux business was ahead of schedule toward the $1B revenue target.
  • Revenue doubled year over year, and the business transitioned in 2.5 years, ahead of the three-year goal.
  • Established distinct positioning, messaging, and market lanes for Linux and the proprietary business.
